David Cottrell’s distinguished career in accounting spans over five decades, marked by his passion for excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, and 74 years living an Alaska dream. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting on June 4, 1971, with his diploma proudly signed by then-California Governor Ronald Reagan. That same year, David passed the rigorous National Certified Public Accountant Examination in a single sitting—a rare achievement accomplished by less than 10% of examinees nationwide.
David began his professional journey with the State of Alaska Office of Legislative Audit in Juneau. After a year, he returned to Anchorage to join the national CPA firm now known as KPMG. In 1977, drawing on his growing expertise and leadership, David co-founded Mikunda, Cottrell & Company, which grew to become Alaska’s largest CPA firm. With over 100 staff members and six partners, the firm established a legacy of providing exceptional financial services throughout the state. After 37 successful years, David transitioned out of the firm, which later became part of the global accounting powerhouse, BDO.
In addition to his accounting career, David has a lifelong passion for flying. Since the mid-1970s, he has logged over 6,000 flight hours and 50 years in his personal aircraft, exploring the vast beauty of Alaska and the western United States. While much of his flying today focuses on Southcentral and Southwestern Alaska, David’s extensive experience as a pilot highlights his adventurous nature and dedication to excellence in all his endeavors.
Through his leadership, vision, and commitment, David has made a lasting impact on Alaska’s accounting community, leaving a legacy of professionalism and innovation. He remains deeply committed to working with both new and long-time clients, helping them achieve stronger financial positions.
